Post-construction cleaning: what to expect after a renovation in NYC

What post-construction cleaning includes, when to schedule it, how to prepare, and why renovation dust needs a different approach than a regular clean.

The contractors are gone, the new kitchen or bathroom is finished, and everything looks great until you run a finger across a shelf. Construction dust is fine, it travels, and it keeps settling for days. A post-construction clean is designed to deal with it properly.

Why renovation dust is different

Drywall sanding, tile cutting, and demolition create very fine particles that float through the whole home, not just the room that was worked on. They settle on top of door frames, inside closed cabinets, in window tracks, on light fixtures, and in HVAC vents. A regular clean just moves this dust around. Post-construction cleaning removes it with multiple passes, working from the top of the room down.

What's included

  • Dusting every surface, from the highest ledges down to the baseboards
  • Wiping inside cabinets, drawers, and closets
  • Cleaning doors, door frames, and trim
  • Dusting light fixtures and vent covers
  • Removing paint specks and adhesive residue from glass and fixtures where it can be done safely
  • Cleaning window glass, sills, and tracks
  • Cleaning new fixtures, tubs, showers, toilets, and sinks
  • Wiping grout haze from new tile where possible
  • Cleaning appliances inside and out
  • Vacuuming and mopping all floors, often more than once

When to schedule it

Book post-construction cleaning after all construction, painting, and installation is complete, and after the contractor has removed large debris, tools, and materials. If we clean while trades are still working, the dust will settle again.

For big renovations, it's often worth scheduling a second, lighter clean about a week later to catch the dust that settles after the first one.

How to prepare

  • Confirm the contractor has finished, including punch-list items
  • Make sure large debris and leftover materials are removed
  • Turn on the lights and make sure the water is running
  • Tell us about any delicate new surfaces, like natural stone or special finishes
  • If you can, change your HVAC filters after the clean

Homeowners vs. contractors

Homeowners usually want the entire home cleaned after a renovation, because the dust gets everywhere. That's what we recommend too.

Contractors and general contractors usually need a unit or commercial space cleaned before the client walkthrough or handover. We work to your timeline and your punch list.
